Battenberg Walk, Gipsy Hill
previous next
Battenberg is a type of cake made of pink and yellow sponge squares divided by apricot jam, and wrapped in marzipan. It is originally thought to have been created in the late 19th century, and has been suggested that it was named to commemorate the marriage between Princess Victoria of Hessee-Darmstadt, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884.
